Welcome to Through the Dogs Eyes

A far cry from old-school “obedience” classes where dogs are forced into compliance by jerking on leads and pushing bottoms down, our group classes are fun and engaging, where the focus is on helping you to understand how to motivate your dog to work with you. We teach you about why your dog does the things that they do, what it means and what you can do about it.

We can help you to prevent a lot of unwanted behaviours by supporting you in teaching your dog alternative, more desirable behaviours. You will also learn a lot about dog behaviour, including being able to recognise important body language signals that tell you how your dog is feeling and what they are ‘talking’ about.

Classes are held on Friday evenings at St Thomas’s Church, Aldridge WS9 8SL, Sunday mornings at Stonnall Community Centre, WS9 9EE and Monday evenings at Chase Terrace Community Centre, WS7 1JH. We are Kennel Club Affiliated so you will have the opportunity, if you attend our Superstars course and more advanced classes, to take the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme assessments. These are not mandatory if you attend classes, but are an optional extra if you wish to work towards these nationally recognised awards with your dog.

Our class sizes are kept small to enable us to give you a high degree of individual attention. In addition, you will also receive the following if you book onto one of our courses:

Ongoing support via phone and email between classes for the course duration

A certificate, rosette and training treats pack for course completion (Puppy and Back to Basics courses)

Plenty of attention in class as each class is run by 2 experienced instructors

Weekly email detailing everything covered in classes along with demonstration videos

Private Facebook group so that you can keep in touch with your classmates, upload pictures and share your training experiences

An ideal course to get you on the right track with your new puppy and to feel confident about how training should look. This course covers the following:

Back to Basics build-up

A mixed class of puppies and adult dogs

A foundation course for anyone who would like to start from scratch with training, laying down the foundations. This course covers the following:

Teaching your dog to know and respond to its name
Laying the foundations of walking without pulling
Coming back when called (recall)
Building trust through handling
How to promote calmness through mental stimulation
Motivating your dog through play
How to socialise your dog the right way and managing the pitfalls
Confidence building and promotion
Sit, down, stand, middle
Appropriate greetings of people and other dogs (not jumping)
The foundations of “leave it”

Superstars

Puppies over 20 weeks and adult dogs

Our Super Stars course is for those humans/dogs who have either completed a foundation course with us or elsewhere so have some basic handling skills. This is an opportunity to develop and enhance your knowledge and training skills as this course covers the following:

Perfecting that recall (off lead recalls around other people, dogs and distractions)
Perfecting walking by your side without pulling (passing other dogs & people)
Go round – an ideal solution for when your dog goes one way & you go the other!
Touch – hands are good things! A great way to move your dog quickly without having to push them
Settle – want to go the pub or cafe with your dog? Then this is the exercise for you
Stay and wait – 2 very different outcomes and how to achieve them
Leave – don’t touch that!
Managing your dog around other dogs
Muzzle training – why every dog needs to be comfortable with a muzzle
Walking through doorways the polite way
How to make grooming and handling a nice thing
Frustration tolerance – why good things come to those who wait!
Plus lots of relevant and useful information about all things ‘dog’

Advanced Classes

We also offer more advanced classes. These are open to people who have completed one or more of the courses above. If you have not completed one of our courses, but have attended classes elsewhere and would like to attend one of our advanced classes then please get in touch as we can sometimes offer a space, which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Both our pups have done training courses with Through The Dogs Eyes and both have fully enjoyed it, they are fun classes that are something to enjoy with your dog while learning about their behaviour and body language, and also teaching them useful tricks you can use in the real world Our pups are always so happy to attend classes, and its really helped us bond, couldnt recommend them more

Since Kit visited on the first session, the knowledge and time she spent with not just my labradoodle but my other dogs was incredible! I have a whole bank of tools and knowledge to help my labradoodle in different environments. In just 7 weeks, Kit has helped my labradoodle and he is so much more happier and relaxed around dogs and people. I would recommend Kit to anybody she is extremely knowledgeable and always provides feedback on my dogs training. As first time puppy owners we have hugely appreciated the fantastic level of support we've had from Kit & Sarah over the last few months. Before we brought Mocha home we purchased their Welcome Home Puppy package, and Kit came round to our house with loads of useful advice on everything from puppy's first night to toilet training, which really helped set our minds at rest over what was to come. When Mocha was 3 months old she started the puppy training course, and we were really impressed with Kit & Sarah's teaching methods and the small class sizes. Mocha loved the class environment so much we have continued on with the Superstars class, and she is currently working towards her Kennel Club bronze certificate at only 7 months old! Kit & Sarah also do regular puppy pop in visits and walks for us during the week when we're busy with work, and Mocha adores spending time with them both - we get a photo diary shortly after each visit, and it's great to see pictures of all the adventures she's been on that day. They have also both been a huge support in answering all sorts of questions for us, ranging from how to find the right harness to helping us get to the bottom of tummy troubles. We would highly recommend Kit & Sarah to anyone looking for training or support with their dogs, as they are both amazing!

We were quite nervous to start our pups but the trainers completely put us all at ease and each class felt very useful and relaxed. We loved the emphasis on understanding them through their experience and this helped with bonding and teaching our little boy to respect dogs. They both improved a lot and family/friends have remarked on the change/how well behaved they can be. I’d definitely recommend this class if you’re thinking of giving your puppy a great start!

The 6 week course we completed was fantastic. Kit and Sarah were very informative and helpful and taught us so many things to help Mabel. You get access to a private Facebook group and they upload videos of everything covered in classes so you never miss anything. They were always friendly, supportive and encouraging. They were always happy to help if you were stuck. In the last session you get a certificate and goodie bag which was a lovely touch too. Thanks again for all your help. You were great!
