KAD 121 – Preparing for a baby
Are you expecting a baby? Are you worried about how your dog will cope when your new tiny human arrives? Perhaps you are already noticing some changes in your dog’s behaviour during pregnancy. Would you like some help preparing your dog (and yourself!) for this big life change?

KAD (Kids Around Dogs) approved professional, Sarah, is here to help you.
This package will help prepare you and your dog for the changes that will happen during pregnancy, when your baby first arrives and how to manage your dog and baby for the first year or so of your baby’s life. You will have 3 at-home consultations included in the package (at least 2 of these will take place prior to the arrival of your baby. The third can take place either before or after the arrival of your baby – whichever you feel will be most helpful). Contents of the sessions will include:
- Helping your dog adjust to the changes that will occur during your pregnancy and the lead-up to the arrival of your baby
- Helping you make suitable arrangements in your home to help keep both your baby and dog safe once your baby arrives
- Crate training or training your dog to be comfortable in a “safe space” such as a puppy pen or gated-off area of your home
- Socialisation to help your dog adjust to sounds and relevant equipment that you will require once your baby arrives
- Promoting calmness in your dog and ideas for enrichment activities
- Helping you make arrangements for your dog when you need to go into hospital
- Discussion and tips on how to help you and your dog cope when baby arrives and in the early weeks.
- Tips on how to manage visitors to your home (family, health visitors, midwife etc.)
- Teaching your dog useful cues, which will be invaluable once your baby arrives: Send to bed and walking alongside a pram, along with up to 4 of the following (you can choose which ones you feel would be most helpful):

- Polite greetings (not jumping up)
- Leave
- Drop
- Touch

Phobias of dogs
Is your child afraid of dogs? Do they panic when they see a dog? Are they a flight risk? Is it affecting everyone’s enjoyment of trips out?
Being afraid of dogs can have a significant impact on the lives of both children and adults. It can also present a safety risk as children may do anything they can to get away from a dog, including actions which may put them in harm’s way such as running into a road.
It may also interfere with a child’s ability to enjoy certain activities, such as going to the park, going to a friend’s house or attending an event where dogs may be present. The same can be said for adults who are afraid of dogs, and might limit their activities as they try to avoid dogs at all costs.
The good news is that we can help you. As a KAD (Kids Around Dogs) professional, Sarah is able to use a special protocol, which has been proven to help hundreds of people overcome a fear of dogs. The protocol consists of 10 sessions in total – 7 of these are online, where there will be no contact with dogs. The final 3 sessions are in person where your child (or you, if it is you with the phobia) will have the option to have interaction with a calm dog who has been assessed as suitable for therapy work. The sessions are very much adult/child-led and you/your child will be given tasks each week, which they are rewarded for completing. At the end of the programme children are awarded a certificate and badge.
